Tell us about your mission to ensure equality regarding the LGBTQ community. At EBANMAN Inc., our mission is to ensure equality and empowerment within the LGBTQ community, particularly for Black gay men. We believe that every individual deserves to live authentically and without fear of discrimination or prejudice. Through our initiatives, advocacy efforts, and platforms like “Representation Matters,” we strive to amplify the voices and experiences of our community, challenge societal norms, and advocate for policies that promote equality and inclusivity for all. Tell us about your coffee table book. “Representation Matters” is a culmination of a year-long project aimed at celebrating the diversity, strength, and beauty within the Black gay community. This coffee table book features profiles of 43 Black gay men and one ally, each sharing their unique experiences, triumphs, and challenges. Through stunning photography and heartfelt narratives, we aim to dispel stereotypes, foster understanding, and inspire others to embrace their true selves. “Representation Matters” is not just a book; it’s a testament to the power of visibility and the significance of telling our own stories. Why did you create EBANMAN?
I founded EBANMAN with a deep sense of purpose and passion. As a Black gay man myself, I recognized the need for a platform that celebrates and uplifts the experiences and identities of Black gay men. EBANMAN was born out of a desire to fill the gaps in representation, advocacy, and community building within our community. Our goal is to create spaces where Black gay men can feel seen, heard, and valued. A place where we can thrive authentically and unapologetically. What do you feel is the disconnect as to why African Americans in the LGBTQ community are not as organized as the Caucasians? Great question, the disconnect within the African American LGBTQ community can be attributed to various factors, including systemic oppression, cultural stigmas, and historical barriers to organizing. African Americans have faced centuries of discrimination and marginalization, which has contributed to lack of resources, representation, and cohesion within our community. Additionally, cultural norms and societal pressures often discourage open discussion about LGBTQ identities, making it challenging to build strong community networks. However, we are actively working to bridge this gap by fostering collaboration, solidarity, and dialogue within our community. What advice would you give some who remains uncomfortable with people knowing the reality of being part of the LGBTQ community? My advice to those who remain uncomfortable with the reality of being part of the LGBTQ community is simple: embrace your truth. Your identity is valid, and your experiences are worthy of celebration. Surround yourself with love, support, and understanding, whether from friends, family, or community. It’s okay to feel uncertain or scared but know that you are not alone. Take the time to educate yourself, engage in meaningful conversations, and seek out supportive spaces where you can be yourself without fear of judgment. Remember, your journey towards self-acceptance and authenticity is a beautiful and empowering one.
