What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I have always had an interest in business.
The thing that gets me motivated about my entertainment business is my passion for music and wanting to create a business/platform for not only my own voice but also for others to be able to have a creative space to express themselves and build something special. I want to not only help change the lives of our team members but also for those around us.
I’ve always admired those in the game like Jay Z and P Diddy who have worked to create the powerhouse labels and artists. A lot of what they do that doesn’t get enough credit is their ability to start businesses that change the lives of people outside of their craft.
That’s another huge part of why I was inspired to become an entrepreneur is because there is no limit to what you can create, and your success or failure is largely dependent on the commitment and effort you put into it.
Running my own business is really the only thing I can see myself doing.
Tell us about your company and services.
My label is called High Life Entertainment, and what we focus on and do is, artist management, promotion, studio time, video shoots, interviews and various deals. I want to eventually create a company that not only deals in music but also sports, egaming, etc.
I want my artist, Imma, and any other artist we bring on board to know that there's a place here at High Life Entertainment for any creatives that want to expand from just the music.
Share details about your artist.
Our first and featured artist Imma (pronounced eeh muh) is the Michael Jordan of this label to put it simply. He's what makes us go. He has the drive, ambition, hunger and talent to be a huge success in this industry. . The way he works, puts songs together and finds beats shows his skills and how bad he wants it.
He sometimes will text me at 1am asking “how do I like a beat or talking to me about an idea he has or wants to put together.” I couldn't ask for a better artist, friend and human being.
Nobody wants him to make it more than me.
What do you look for when signing on a new client?
Talent, skills, motivation and appeal.
What do you represent? Do you have a fanbase? Do you have the drive to really make this happen? I look for focus and the ability to consistently want to get better and constantly wanting to work.
I see myself as “the Coach” If you have the talent, skills, motivation and appeal, then I’m the person who can help you package it in a way that can get you noticed. If an artist is not being proactive about their life and their career, it's going to be incredibly hard for me to convince others that the artist really wants this and will do what it takes.
Everyone needs to be “coachable”.
What keeps you motivated in such a competitive industry?
The end game. Knowing that I can help discover the next big thing is motivation enough, but the competitiveness is what drives me and keeps me going. Being able to see my peers growing and building success of their own is very satisfying.
Without the competitiveness I feel like everything would be stagnant. It should be about finding a way to have your edge, finding your lane and avenue and attacking that as hard as you can, in your way.
I look at competitiveness like pressure and what others are doing around you is what should motivate you to go harder.
Pressure can burst pipes.
What is the most challenging aspect of being an entrepreneur?
A couple things can be challenging. One is building from the ground up and facing the struggles and challenges from that. I think it can make some feel overwhelmed, or feel like they’ve hit a wall. But when you feel like jumping, don’t jump.
Another is not always having the resources at first to match your ideas. It can be very frustrating. But I also think a lot of it is just growing pains and some impatience too. Most new and young businesses have the same challenges
But at the end of the day, the business success or failure is largely based on what energy I can bring to it. That’s why I have to always be at the top of my game. For me, my business and my artists. Anything you do will have its pros and cons.
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
I see Imma on the charts, tours, continuing to create a bigger and better platform and HLE growing beyond belief.
By then, God willing, I want to see other departments of High Life Entertainment out there too. As I mentioned before things like a sports agency & egaming are all things I want to hopefully have started by then as well.
We have a lot of things cooking up and coming in the next 5 years so definitely stay tuned!!!
