How has the pandemic impacted your life as a first responder?
The Covid 19 pandemic has impacted my life in a couple of way. There’s definitely an element of fear constant fear that comes into play when at the firehouse, or running calls. For me this situation has made me more aware of how Important personal protective equipment is in our field, which is a good thing ultimately. The thought of contracting the virus and possibly spreading it to a loved one, after leaving my job is a constant thought. It’s caused me to be more distant from my family at this time.

What are your methods of relaxing to minimize stress?
My methods of relaxing to minimize stress includes mid day sleep after morning workouts. Making sure I’m getting proper rest. Meditation, and reading are also things that minimize stress for me.

How have the Arts shown up in your life?
Photography Has shown of a great deal in my life. I think I’m in love with the art of being able to tell a very detailed story through a photograph. Acting is another art that teaches me how to bring certain emotions out of people by playing a character. I’ve always been fascinated with that skill ever since I was a kid.

What was your first tattoo and why?
My first Tattoo was a common design that I would see in my community. It was a Panther, and I was 16 at the time. Honestly I wanted a tattoo because I thought it symbolized being older, or some kind of rebel. I was definitely too young.

Tell us about your body art and what it means?
Most of the body art that I have is traditionally Samoan. It’s a hand tapping art form called Tatau. To me, it’s a symbol of commitment, and dedication to the liberation of my community and the people in it.

What kind of challenges have you faced by having so many tattoos?
Honestly I haven’t faced any negative challenges by having tattoos. It seems that this era is fascinated with the art, and very welcoming to tattoo body art.

What advice would you give someone who wants a tattoo?
My advice to someone considering getting a tattoo would be to take their time. A tattoo is something that you will have on your body for the rest of your life. A decision like that should not be made overnight. Make sure that you’re full comfortable with the tattoo you’re getting, and what comes with it.

The artwork and designs go beyond being skin deep—there is history and deep meanings behind them. The tattoo and designs of the Samoa islands represents community, power, status, respect, honor, and is a mark of pride that are only to be worn by Samoans. For those who have no cultural influence or heritage background it is an act of disrespect to display their symbols and designs.
